In New York, Mustafa Yanaz dreams of intricate, fantastical designs of hair that are still modern and beautiful. The Turkish-born and German-raised hairstylist’s late-night musings are fueled by a childhood snack. After watching movies for hours with his cousins during the holidays, they would eat this Turkish dish that combines sucuklu sausage, cheese, and bread into toasted, melty perfection. To offset the savory, the sucuklu toast, Yanaz recommends pairing it with hot chocolate. “It tastes like heaven,” he tells Family Style.

Ingredients

  • Bread slices (any type)
  • Cheese of any variety)
  • Turkish sucuklu sausage

Instructions

  1. You can use any type of bread you have on hand. Take your chosen slices and place them on a clean surface.
  2. Add slices of cheese on one side of each bread slice.
  3. Place a few slices of Turkish sucuklu sausage (or your preferred sausage) on top of the cheese.
  4. Gently sandwich the slices together, creating a delicious cheese and sausage filling between them.
  5. Preheat a grill or a pan over medium heat. I'm using a grill toaster. Grill it without the top layer (bread) first.
  6. As the cheese begins to melt and the bread crisps up, add a bit more cheese on top of the sandwich.
  7. Continue grilling until both sides of the toast are golden brown and the cheese is melted to perfection.
